The Southeast Asia's oldest Anglican Church - St. George's Church is located in the heart of Georgetown, the capital of Penang. It is situated at the corner of Farquhar Street and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, not far away from the Kuan Yin Teng Temple Penang.

Overview

The St. George's Church Penang was built in the year of 1818, The building of this church commenced a total amount of 60,000 Spanish Dollars. The church is initiated by the Penang Colonial Chaplain, Rev. Robert Sparke Hutchings. He too, is the founder of Penang Free School, again, the oldest English School in the Southeast Asia region. He then gave his name to a secondary school nearby, namely Hutching School. There is memorial of Francis Light on the lawn of the church. Now, the church is still operating, with services that are held twice on every Sunday at 8.30am and 10.30am respectively. Most tourists are amazed with the architecture of the white standing building.

There are other nearby attractions such as Little India Penang and Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion. Just like Chinatown, Little India is as interesting. You can shop for saree, silk and more there. Besides that, the food offered are simple delicious. There are all types of Indian food including thosai, briyani rice and all sorts of curries. Cheong Fatt Sze Mansion is once a normal Chinese Mansion until it is converted to a heritage hotel. Moreover, this hotel mansion has been featured in films and documented throughout the years. Pay a visit to Batu Feringghi if you are a beach lover, lots of interesting activities can be done there including horse riding and sailing. You can stroll along the pedestrian pavement of Gurney Beach Penang too.

Transport

Travelling via Rapid Bus in Penang is a good choice. From Penang Jetty, take the bus to Little India. There, you will see the while building of the church hence, just walk your way there.
