Location

The Sri Mahamariamman Temple (Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple) is located in Penang's Little India, at Lebuh Queen (Queen Street), Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. The back entrance for the temple is on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Pitt Street), in between both streets namely the Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Chulia.

Overview

The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple standing in Penang, Malaysia. It is standing there, the same spot, since 200 years ago. Amazing sculptures of gods and goddess are to be seen in over the main entrance of the temple. Apart from the name of Sri Mahamariamman, it is also known as the Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple and Sri Arulmigu Mahariamman Temple. The temple is open daily, from 6.30am to 12 noon and from 4.30pm to 9pm. When you are going to visit the temple, do remember to take off your shoes before you step it. The interior of the temple is also filled with fascinating statues of Hindu deities including the Lord Subramiam, Durga and Ganapathy. During festive seasons, for example Deepavali and Thaipusam, the temples will be packed with thousands of devotees making offerings.

There are many nearby sights that you can pay a visit to. Do go to Kek Lok Si (Buddist) Temple. This temple is situated in Air Itam and it is one of the well known temples in Penang. The construction of the temple begun in the year of 1890 and since then, it never stopped. There is a garden, turtle pond and many fascinating sculptures. Another well known temple in Penang is Khoo Kongsi. It's not entirely a temple but is known as a clan temple. It is always filled with tourist who fancy historic attraction. Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion should be in the list when you are visiting Penang. This historic mansion is built according to the principles of Feng Shui It has been converted into a hotel in recent years and yes, it is one of the famous hotels in Penang.

If you are a nature lover, there are two main places you must visit when you are in Penang. One of them is the popular Penang Hill. You can get to Penang Hill by a funicular train. There are many activities offered on the hill including a canopy walk and a visit to the bird sanctuary. Do go to Botanical Gardens too. It is a garden well planted with all kind of plants. Besides, the name of each plant is labeled. This is indeed the right place to appreciate the plants in Penang and earn some knowledge while visiting. The last place you have to go to is Gurney (Persiaran Gurney). The famous Gurney Drive which offers all kinds of hawker food is there. This is the ideal place to have a taste of all Penang local delicacies including Rojak, Asam Laksa and etc.

Transport

From Penang International Airport, you can take the taxi to the Sri Mahamariamman Temple with an estimated 30 minutes drive.

As the temple is located in a walking distance from the Air Itam town, you can take the Rapid Penang to the town and walk to the temple. Do take note of Rapid Penang Bus with the number of 201, 203, 204, 206, 306 and U502 as all these buses ply the route to Air Item.
