The Khoo Kongsi is normally known as a miniature clan village. It is located in Cannon Square, Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia. The entrance of the Khoo Kongsi is at Lebuh Cannon, the side entrance for this clan temple is at Armenian Street (Lebuh Armenia) and there is one more entrance on Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai).

Overview

Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clanhouse. It is very famous as it is the grandest clan temple not in Penang, but the country of Malysia. It was built 100 years ago. It's historic setting and architecture is what attracts the crowds of tourists. This clan temple is the setting that marks the first period of entry of the Chinese to Malaysia. There is a large courtyard, facing the clan temple. This is the venue of the popular and historic Chinese Opera. This event is normally held around one of the grandest festive season celebrated, the Chinese New Year. There is a museum installed on the ground floor from the recent renovation with an admission fee of RM5.00.

There are many nearby attractions all situated in Georgetown. One of them is the Fort Cornwallis. This is the largest fort in Malaysia and believe it or not, it has never been engaged to any battles before. This is the place where the historical Francis Light first stepped foot in Penang. The next interesting place to go visit is the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. This mansion is very popular due to the fact that it is built according to the principles of Feng Shui. Besides offering guided tours, it is one of the fascinating Hotels in Penang as it acts as a bed and breakfast in recent years

Attention all shopaholics. Do go to the nearby Prangin Mall. This shopping mall is located beside Komtar. The mall offers many varieties of clothes and electronic gadgets. From budget discounts items to high end brands available. The next popular shopping mall is the 1st Avenue Shopping Mall. It is a new shopping mall, opened at the end of year 2010. Karaoke, food court and cinemas are all available there. Here is where the luxurious brand Coach marks its first existence in Penang. Gurney Plaza Shopping Mall is popular too. Most tourists spend their time there while waiting for the hawker stalls in Gurney (Persiaran Gurney), namely Gurney Drive to start selling their delicious food. All famous Penang's food including Assam Laksa and Rojak are all available there.

Transport

You can take the cab from Penang International Airport to get to Khoo Kongsi. The drive is estimated to take up 30 minutes. You can take the Rapid Penang Bus with the number, 401 to get to Georgetown and from there, take the trishaw or taxi to Khoo Kongsi.
