The Botanical Gardens or the Waterfall Garden as there is a cascading waterfall located nearby is located at the end of Jalan Air Terjun (Waterfall road). It is situated around 8km away from the city centre of Georgetown. There a small road that leads to the Penang Hill just by the left hand side of the Gardens.

Overview

The Garden existed in the year of 1884 and it was formerly known as the Waterfalls Garden as there is a high cascade waterfall with its water flowing through the Gardens itself. However, you have no chance in visiting the waterfall nowadays as it is on the territory of the water supply. Every morning, you can see locals any maybe foreigners exercise in the Gardens. They jog while enjoying the beauty of the Gardens with some fresh, clean air. The trees plated there have their own name plates in front of themselves. And so, you can gain some knowledge on the unique trees in Malaysia. The main attraction of the Gardens is the presence of monkeys. The total of monkeys in the Gardens is up to 200 of them. They may be cute but do not feed them as they will be aggressive. Try not to eat in front of them as they may snatch the food away from you. There is also a guided tour where you can just follow if you prefer to.

One of the nearby attractions that worth a go is the Kek Lok Si (Buddhist) Temple. This temple is the biggest and most beautiful temple in South East Asia. The temple was built decades and decades ago but still, the construction never ends. The main attraction of the temple is the huge bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy, Kuan Yin. The temple is breathtaking during the night as the glittering lights and lanterns hanging can be seen from far away. Another nearby attraction is Penang Toy Museum. This museum has over 100,000 numbers of different toys and related collectibles including Star Wars, Barbie Dolls, Batman and more, almost anything as long as you can name it. The museum is opened daily from 9am to 9pm and so it will not be a problem in time adjustment during your visit in Penang.

Hotels in Penang are in a wide range, starting from budget motels to luxurious 5 stars hotels. Most of the luxurious hotels are located in Gurney (Persiaran Gurney) and Batu Feringghi. These two places are always packed with crowds as Gurney offers nightlife, malls and hawker food whereas Batu Feringghi offers sea breeze and beaches.

Transport

From Penang International Airport, you can either rent a car or take the cab straight away to the Gardens. The estimated time to reach the Gardens is around 30 minutes. From Komtar, you can take the Rapid Penang Bus to the Gardens for only RM2.00.
